# Meet Our EIP Team: Jim O'Shaughnessy, Program Coach

October 27, 2026

Posted by [EIP Content Team](https://energyinfrapartners.com/blog/author/eip-content-team)

Each EIPer brings a unique background, experience, and story to our organization. In our employee spotlight series, we’re shining a light on the people behind the scenes who make EIP a trusted partner in the energy industry.

![Jim](https://energyinfrapartners.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Jim.jpg?width=252&height=252&name=Jim.jpg)

In this employee Q&A, you’ll get to meet EIP Program Coach, Jim O’Shaughnessy. Jim has been with EIP since 2023 and brings extensive experience supporting commercial and industrial energy efficiency programs. At EIP, he supports C&I energy efficiency program development and outreach. Jim has recruited accounts representing nearly 300 MWh into SEM programming while coaching participating facilities on energy-saving opportunities.

#### ***What led you to this industry & role?***

> I spent 20 years in commercial lighting, working primarily with the transition to LEDs. I started out my lighting career with General Electric, moved on to Cooper Lighting, then also worked with some large national distributors, in primarily business development roles. I worked with electrical contractors who did large projects leading into 2008, then got back into lighting. My career in the electrical business had always been around energy efficiency in relation to lighting.
>
> I would always say that I very much enjoyed working in a mission driven environment. When I was contacted about a position in the implementation world, it seemed to be a great combination of a competitive corporate environment with goals and measurable wins and losses – which being a former athlete, I always enjoyed – as well as having a mission behind it, where I felt like we were making a significant impact on the things that were important to me.

#### ***How do you describe your job to people who know nothing about the industry or energy programs?***

> I do all the recruiting for new participants into the SEM program. It's essentially sales. I'm selling the SEM program. I work with participants and marshal them through the program. We meet monthly and we act as the single point of contact for all things energy efficiency related. We inform participants about incentives available, but we also look to bring solutions in the operational and maintenance space that helps them reduce their carbon footprint, and lower their energy costs.
>
> After 20 years of selling lighting, I've always described green technology as the technology that saves you green. Energy efficiency isn’t the sexiest part of sustainability, but it's generally considered one of the most impactful. I tell a lot of folks that the new technologies are exciting and fun to talk about, but if you really want to have an impact, do the kind of work we do.

#### ***How do you make the program easier for customers?***

> We often do a lot of heavy lifting or behind the scenes work that can make these types of programs unappealing to customers or participants. These programs aren’t as straightforward as, “I bought this and now I get a rebate.” There's an incentive process, there's an application, there's terminology that's unique to how utilities think. These are all things we can help translate to the customer but also help the customer translate what they've done to the utility. Utilities want their customers to be more efficient. They want their customers to take advantage of these programs, but these programs are designed by legislation. They have specific requirements that have to be met in order to provide incentives to customers, but customers don't always understand what those requirements are, or they don't know how to navigate those requirements. That's where we can step in and make things a lot easier for everybody.

#### ***What part of your personality do you think helps you do your work well?***

> I’m not exactly a wallflower. I enjoy people. I've been in sales and even when I was working in social services & nonprofits, I did a lot of sales-like activities. I worked with programs, promoting them in the community. I very much think of sales as problem solving for people. To a great extent, that is what I find rewarding about this work. I enjoy solving problems for folks.
>
> Very early on in life I learned your integrity is all you have. If you don't find out in the short term, you definitely find it out in the long term that word gets out quickly when you’re giving quick answers and solutions that only benefit you. I've been in the marketplace for a long time. I've developed the trust of the people I engage with, and I look for solutions that aren't necessarily always just going to directly benefit me. I work to get my customers solutions. And if I find solutions and other programs that are better fits, I know that in the long run, my customers are going to trust me when I recommend something. You create those relationships and that's where you build trust. You've got to prove that you're going to look out for their interests, not directly your own.
>
> You really must learn to embrace what motivates your customer and participant. You can't project what your motivations are, and you can't necessarily define what their concerns are. I really wish everyone was motivated by things like climate change and sustainability, but some customers are just motivated by annual performance goals.

#### ***What advice would you give any young person wanting to break into this industry?***

> I used to think that if I ever had to sell anything for a living, I'd starve. The truth is, we're all in sales. We're all solving problems for people. We all have relationships.
> that we draw on. I always tell young people that your friends and family are your network. You start with that network, and you build from it. You've got to become comfortable asking friends and family what they do, telling them what you’re interested in, and seeing where those connections are because that will often lead to opportunities for you professionally.
>
> I would also say, coming out of this period where we're focused on working from home, you must find ways to network outside of it. I see some incredibly talented young people struggling to find roles or get out from the role they're in and a lot of it is because they don't have the network of people to draw upon.
